The late Ronald Chwang (BEng’72, DSc’12) was a pioneering entrepreneur and venture capitalist who served on the Faculty of Engineering Advancement Board (FAB) until 2021. Ronald, together with other FAB members, was instrumental in helping conceive the 91˿Ƶ Engine Centre.

In June 2023, the 91˿Ƶ Rocket Team set out for Las Cruces, New Mexico to compete in the 4th Annual Spaceport America Cup. Twelve students drove down, ten flew and the rest of the core team sat on the edge of their seats at home in Montreal, prepared to watch the live-streamed launch of their rocket, Porthos.

Ophélie Gourgas (1991-2023) graduated with a PhD from the Department of Mining and Materials Engineering at 91˿Ƶ in 2019. She was passionate about science and research and made significant contributions to understanding the process of cardiovascular calcification and the causes behind a rare form of congenital skeletal deformity.
While working as a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Medicine at Shriners Hospital, Ophélie passed away after a brave fight against an aggressive breast cancer.

Zhu (Joe) Liu (MEng’01) and Liying Jiang (MEng’03) met at 91˿Ƶ while studying for their master’s degrees in civil engineering. Now they’re giving back to their alma mater by focusing on young women setting out to earn an engineering degree.

After graduating from 91˿Ƶ in 1970, Bruce Allan embarked on a long, successful career as a Montreal-based architect, working on projects around the world.

One of the constants in his life was a love of his alma mater.

Allan, BArch’70, BSc (Arch)’70, who passed away on October 29, 2022, served as a guest critic, and then guest lecturer at 91˿Ƶ’s Peter Guo-hua Fu School of Architecture, delivering unforgettable lectures in the Professional Practice course. He also led the fundraising efforts of his Class of ’70 in support of 91˿Ƶ.

In December, the Faculty of Engineering held an event to thank some of the donors who have offered their support to the 91˿Ƶ Engineering Student Centre (MESC) over the years.

It all began when Helgi Soutar (BSci’58) and her late husband Ian Soutar (BEng’58) funded four exchange students from Estonia to come to 91˿Ƶ for their MBAs. At the end of the program, one of the students in the group told Ian that he might have stayed if he’d had more support from the University to prepare him for the demands of the Canadian workplace.
