Overview
The Graduate Student Awards are annual awards which recognize excellence among graduate students in the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences. The awards are co-sponsored by the 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ Dentistry Graduate Student Society and the Associate Dean, Research and Graduate Dental Education. The 2024 awards are listed below along with important dates regarding submissions.
For graduating students

Outstanding PhD Oral Health Sciences Student Award
This award recognizes a PhD student who has submitted their thesis and has demonstrated a high level of excellence and expertise in their field during the course of their studies. This can include academic and research achievements, excellence beyond course work, and commitment to their area of study. The award is given to one student from the faculty.
Eligibility: PhD student who has submitted their thesis.
Application process: Students need to submit the application form a 250-word statement of purpose, and their CV.

Outstanding MSc Dental Sciences - Thesis Student Award
This award recognizes a MSc Dental Sciences - Thesis student who has submitted their thesis and has demonstrated a high level of excellence and expertise during the course of their studies. This can include academic and research achievements, excellence beyond course work, and commitment to their area of study. The award is given to one student from the Faculty.
Eligibility: MSc Dental Sciences - Thesis student who has submitted their thesis.

Outstanding MSc Dental Sciences - Non-Thesis Student Award/Recognition
This award recognizes a MSc MSc Dental Sciences - Non-Thesis student who has finished the course requirements and has demonstrated a high level of excellence and expertise in their field. This can include academic and research achievements, excellence beyond course work, and commitment to their area of study. The award is given to one student from the faculty.
Eligibility: MSc Dental Sciences - Non-Thesis student who has finished the course requirements.
Application process: Students need to submit the application form, a 250-word statement of purpose, and their CV.

Academic
Graduate Student Teaching Assistant Award
This award recognizes excellence among graduate students serving as teaching assistants (TA). The award is given to one student from the Faculty.
Eligibility: Full-time graduate students who served as a TA during the academic year.
Application process: Students need to submit the application form, a 250-word statement of purpose, and their CV.

Academic Performance Award (Dean’s honor list)
This award recognizes academic excellence among MSc Dental Sciences (Thesis and Non-Thesis) and PhD Oral Health Sciences students based on their grade point average (GPA).
Eligibility: Full-time graduate students (MSc Thesis / MSc Non-Thesis/ PhD) during the academic year.
Application process: : All full-time students in good standing [MSc Non-Thesis, MSc Thesis (MSc1 and MSc2), PhD (PhD2 to PhD4) will be automatically considered for this award.

3M Thesis Award
This award is given to the winner of the Faculty 3M Thesis competition. 3MT competitions are an opportunity for graduate students to showcase their leading-edge research before a live audience. With only three minutes and a single slide, students will be judged on their ability to engage their audience and convey the complexities of their work to a diverse, non-expert audience.
Application process: Registration for the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences 3MT competition is in January. The competition is held each February.
Students compete for three prizes:
- Overall Presentation PhD
- Overall Presentation MSc
- People’s choice award (PhD and MSc)

Best Oral and Poster Presentation
These awards are given to the winners of the best oral and poster presentation during the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences annual Research Day.
Best Paper Award
This award recognizes the excellence of the work carried out by Faculty students.
Application process: Students can submit a paper published within one year of the competition deadline. In case of multiple student authorship, the award will be divided among the student authors enrolled at the Faculty.

Best Paper Award by Community Vote
Application process: Students can submit a lay language summary (maximum 250 words) of their paper published within one year of the competition deadline.

Graduate Research Enhancement and Travel (GREAT) Awards
The GREAT Award Program offers funding to facilitate conference travel and other research training enhancement optionsÌýsuch as fieldwork trips, archival research, and extramural collaborative research in Canada*. One GREAT Award per student is allowed each year.
Eligibility: Thesis Master's or Doctoral students in good standing, registered full-time, and have completed a travel registry if the activity is outside the Greater Montreal Area with no time limitation. GREAT Awards are not for practicum or internship funding.
Application process: The student must submit the online application form, a budget justification, supervisor’s statement, and acceptance of abstract.
Value of award and payment:Ìýhalf the estimated costs for travel, lodging, conference expenses, etc.Ìýup to a maximum of $500. Original receipts are required for reimbursement.ÌýPlease note that the supervisor contributes an amount equal to the faculty.

The MDGSS Award
This award is given to three graduate studentsÌýstudents who contributed to facilitating academic and social events held by the 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ Dentistry Graduate Student Society (MDGSS).

This award is given to the graduate student who has shown outstanding leadership qualities.

Outstanding Student Leader in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Award
This award recognizes the contribution of graduate students to Equity,ÌýDiversity, and Inclusion and is given to the student who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in EDI.
