OFNIE Students From Northern Quebec Unite at Fall Convocation

Whereas the commute for most 91˿Ƶ students who are convocating in the fall is just a bus, metro, or car ride away to Place des Arts, the students from the Office of First Nations and Inuit Education (OFNIE) had a bigger journey to contend with. On October 28th, 16 Cree and Inuit graduates traveled down from Northern Quebec to participate in 91˿Ƶ’s Fall Convocation and to celebrate their milestone achievements.

Alumni Highlight: KPE Grads in 2019 Olympic Hall of Fame!

This year's inductees into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame include Faculty of Education alumni from the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education, who were part of the 2010 Vancouver Olympic women's hockey team. Goaltenders Charline Labonté (B.Ed '11, M.SportPsych '15) and Kim St. Pierre (B.Kin '04) were on hand along with Peter Smith (B.Ed '79, M.SportPsych '86), who served as an assistant coach for the gold medal team.

Philippa Parks Awarded the Weston Fellowship

Congratulations to Philippa Parks, of the Department of Integrated Studies in Education, who has recently been awarded the Weston Fellowship (2019)! The Weston Fellowship is awarded by the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Office to an outstanding full-time graduate student interested in conducting research on university teaching and learning in any Faculty.

Gideon Seun Olanrewaju, a DISE PhD student and a 2019 Deloitte Scholarship recipient, is one of ten young leaders attending the One Young World Summit being held October 22nd to 25th in London, England.

Youth Podcast Interviews 91˿Ƶ Graduate Students

Faculty Lecturer, Diane Dechief, and PhD Candidate, Rackeb Tesfaye at Broad Science @science_broads, worked with eight youth from Pierre Elliott Trudeau Elementary School and their teacher, Ms. Laura Annie Bouffard, to interview four Scientist and 91˿Ƶ Graduate Students, Alexandra Gelle, Chelsea Bishop, Debarati Das and Scott Bell, for a podcast involving the youth in discussions and activities related to science communication.

W. Y. Alice Chan: Bill 21 May Embolden Religious Bullying

W. Y. Alice Chan, PhD (DISE) publishes an article about how Bill 21 will impact religious bullying in school settings. Through her research, Chan has examined how learning about religious diversity can contribute to preventing hate and bullying in schools, and that banning religious symbols in the public sector is ill-advised.

DISE's Christopher Dietzel Gets Mitacs Globalink Research Award

Christopher Dietzel, a PhD student in DISE and research assistant on the IMPACTS Project, has received a Mitacs Globalink Research Award. Chris will travel to Australia and work with Dr. Kath Albury, a professor at Swinburne University of Technology, to research violations of safety and consent that trans and gender non-binary people experience while using dating apps. For his doctorate, Chris is studying sexual violence in LGBTQ+ communities and sexual consent related to dating app use.

91˿Ƶ Education Graduation in Pikogan Covered by CBC News

Nearly 60 Cree students their graduation from 91˿Ƶ's Faculty of Education this past Saturday in Pikogan, Quebec. Our Office of First Nations and Inuit Education offers full-time and part-time teacher certification programs in Cree and Inuit communities in Quebec as well as in Kahnawake and Listuguj. Even though these students may be far away off campus, they are an important part of our Faculty and the 91˿Ƶ community. CBC's Susan Bell covered the story.
