Pediatric Nephrology

The Division of Pediatric Nephrology is a聽group of five聽Pediatric Nephrologists working with a dedicated team of specialist nephrology nurses, a dietician, a social worker, a psychologist, and administrative professionals to provide care to children with a wide range of kidney diseases. The conditions we treat include urinary tract infections, congenital anomalies of the kidneys and urinary tract, glomerulonephritis, nephrotic syndrome, hypertension, genetic renal diseases, and electrolyte disorders, among others. We have active hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and kidney transplantation programs. We also provide continuous renal replacement therapy, plasmapheresis, red blood cell exchange, and white blood cell depletion therapies. We have expertise in a wide range of immunosuppressive and immunomodulating therapies, including new biologic agents.

Our team provides both inpatient and outpatient care to children from across Quebec. The Nephrology team cares for inpatients admitted under the Nephrology service and provides consultation services hospital-wide (Montreal Children's Hospital). Nephrology clinics, including general nephrology, kidney transplantation, dialysis, chronic kidney disease, and multidisciplinary clinics focusing on transition from pediatric to adult care run four聽mornings per week in the A2 South clinic area. We also maintain Outreach clinics in Chicoutimi and in Gatineau, and provide care to Indigenous and other communities in remote Northern Quebec in collaboration with general pediatricians serving the communities and using Teleheath facilities.

History

The Montreal Children鈥檚 Hospital (MCH) is one of the 鈥榗radles鈥 of pediatric nephrology. Dr. Keith Drummond, the first pediatric nephrologist in Canada and one of the founding fathers of the speciality, practiced at the Montreal Children鈥檚 Hospital from 1964 to 2001. Dr. Drummond made many important contributions to the specialty including pioneering the use of the diagnostic renal biopsy. He was also among the first to use immunosuppressive agents to treat glomerular disease.

The MCH聽Division of Pediatric Nephrology also initiated the first Renal Genetics program in 1980. This program remains strong today, with the expertise of Dr. Paul Goodyer and Dr. Indra Gupta.

The Pediatric Nephrology Subspecialty Residency Program was started by Dr. Drummond in 1964 and remains active today. Graduates of our training program are practicing in almost all Canadian pediatric nephrology programs, as well as in the USA, Switzerland, Australia, Jamaica, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.
