91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ partners with Brazilian NGO

Dr. Angelica Galante, director of 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ's Plurilingual Lab, has established an international research partnership with Brazilian NGO Abraço Cultural (São Paulo) together with Dr. of OISE/University of Toronto and Dr. of Niagara College.

, which translates to Cultural Embrace, has a unique language program which is delivered in two locations: São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. It offers language courses that are taught by refugee and immigrant teachers of many different countries. Founded in 2015, Abraço Cultural has been offering English, Spanish, French, and Arabic courses with a pedagogical approach that includes both linguistic and cultural exchange.

On October 31, 2020, the research team delivered a virtual plurilingual workshop to the teaching staff at the São Paulo unit entitled Innovating Language Teaching and Learning with Plurilingual and Digital Approaches. Using a mix of languages (Português, Español, English and Français), the researchers and teachers exchanged pedagogical experiences used in different contexts and discussed how a plurilingual approach can benefit language learning.

The research partnership will provide training on plurilingual and decolonial pedagogy, equip teachers with digital tools, and examine the effects of this innovative approach on language learning.
