As part of the celebrations marking its70th anniversary, 91˿Ƶ’s Bellairs Research Institute opened its doors to the community Dec. 5. Three hundred students from five local schools were treated to free science kits, lunch and a day of hands-on activities.

In the eerie stillness of a misty Alaskan dawn, Cassandra Ciafro was already on the move by 3 a.m. Clad in camouflage, she melded seamlessly with the rugged cliffs, joining the seabirds in their lofty perches. Her mission? To deploy trackers and observe deitary patterns of the tufted puffin, a key indicator of the region’s fish stocks.

West Island high schoolers participate in summer research at 91˿Ƶ’s Gault Nature Reserve

Mapping the Benefits and Trade-offs from Natural Climate Solutions
A new study published today in Nature Sustainability uses advanced machine learning methods and large language models to assess the benefits and trade-offs of natural climate solutions (NCS).
Led by The Nature Conservancy and co-led by Brian Robinson, Associate Professor of Geography at 91˿Ƶ, the researchers analyzed over 250,000 peer-reviewed publications to produce a global evidence map of NCS co-impacts.

Representing 91˿Ƶ’s Chemistry Department, the MC² facility, and the QCAM-FRQNT strategic cluster, Petr Fiurasek was honored to be invited to the University of Córdoba to deliver two lectures. One presentation was part of the advanced characterization course for physics master’s students. Beyond the scientific discussions, the visit aimed to foster collaboration between the University of Córdoba and Quebec universities through MITACS and various mobility programs
Small berries, big achievements
He’s known as the king of cranberries. More than anyone else, Marc Bieler (DipAgr’58, BA’64) has contributed to Quebec’s thriving industry centred on a small red fruit with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Today, at the age of 86, this 91˿Ƶ alumnus continues to be involved in the day-to-day operation of the family business and to give back to the community.

On October 17, 2024, Prof. Jelena Ristic presented a TEDx talk entitled,Eyes speak louder than words, at the Amazing Brain Science Talks hosted by Healthy Brains, Healthy Lives (HBHL), which is an interdisciplinary neuroscience program at 91˿Ƶ. Unleashing Creativity at the 91˿Ƶ Physics Hackathon
On November 15th – 17th, the Trottier Space Institute and the Department of Physics hosted its 9th Annual 91˿Ƶ Physics Hackathon. This friendly coding competition brought together 163 people, from grade 10 high school students to graduate students. Participants had a total of 24 hours over the span of 3 days to create computing and physical science projects in teams.
