Seed and Branch Grant Program

Call for Proposals

The Bieler School of Environment (BSE) at 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ solicits proposals for funding under its Seed and Branch Grant Program in Environmental Sustainability. Funding in this round will be available for two purposes:

  1. Funding for outreach and communication of BSE-led research, including: writing policy briefs, visits to representatives, for example, in Ottawa, YouTube shorts or other video products, workshops or other events to share results with relevant communities, which extend research impact beyond one’s academic community.
  2. Funding for workshops to bring together researchers and partners (including those outside one’s academic community) to brainstorm and write larger proposals.

Section Criteria

  1. Alignment with purposes A or B above.
  2. Feasibility of the proposed activity and potential to succeed at meeting its goals.
  3. Legacy, including the possibility of securing further funding and the creation of communities around emerging sustainability-related topics at 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ.
  4. Promotion of BSE-led or aligned research to decision-making and policy communities (broadly defined).

Eligibility and Terms

  • The value of awards will range from $5000 to $40,000, based on the scale and scope of proposed activities.
  • Awards are for a one-year period. · Open to all BSE Jointly Appointed Faculty, Faculty Lecturers, and BSE Associate Members (and their co-PIs).
  • The Review Committee may stipulate changes, including to the funding amount, as a condition of funding.
  • All PIs will submit a short final report on use of funds and outcomes, including appendices of output (white papers, submitted papers, workshop agendas, meeting summaries).
  • Unspent funds must be returned at the end of the year or close of the project. Extensions will be granted only in limited cases, and must be requested at least 1 month in advance of the close of the project.Ìý
Proposals Format and Submission Instructions
  1. The Proposal should include:Ìý
  2. Project description (max 1 page).
  3. References (in addition to the 1 page).
  4. Budget outline and justification (1 page).
  5. Description of project partners and clients, as applicable, including description of the team’s experience with these partners and clients (max 1 page).
Review Schedule

Proposals are due December 1.
Funding decisions will be made within two weeks of the due date.
