Meet your Peer Mentors

Whether you’re an incoming student or you’ve been at 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ for a while, peer mentors can help you navigate life at Schulich.

Mentors can provide a fellow student’s opinion on courses, clubs, and important resources that you might not already know. They receive training in active listening and referral, which means they can help you connect with the support you need when you need it. They’re also there to talk about things like gigging, working, studying, practicing, making friends, exploring Montreal…

  • To sign up, see the application information above. We’ll match you with one of our student mentors at the end of the Fall term. Once you’ve been paired, you’ll meet with your mentor at least once a month in the winter. There will also be opportunities to meet and socialize with other mentors and mentees!

Meet Mattea (she/her)

LANGUAGES: English

PROGRAM: Music and Education, Classical Piano, U2

HOMETOWN: Sarnia, Ontario

More about Mattea

Hi! I'm in my second year at Schulich, where I'm studying to become a high school band teacher. When I'm not doing school work, I spend my time cooking, singing Broadway show tunes, watching reels of cute animals, gaming, and reading. Growing up, my family moved to a new country every few years for my father's work. So far, I've lived in English Guyana, Nigeria, the UAE, Angola, Canada, and China. Loved ones have described me as "book smart but not street smart", "the most unathletic, athletic person" and "the mom friend". Draw from that whatever conclusions you will... I believe that for many, adjusting to a new place is an extremely daunting thing. And as someone who has always been "the stranger" coming into a new place, I know how difficult transitions can be. I wanted to be a friendly face to incoming students, and give incomers the option to talk to someone they can relate to.

I love being able to help out those who are now in the same place I was years ago.

Meet Emmet (they/them)

LANGUAGES: English

PROGRAM: B.Mus. Jazz Bass Performance, U1 (second year)

HOMETOWN: Richmond, BC

More about Emmet

Hi! I’m Emmet and I’m a double bassist, composer, and educator. I primarily play jazz (Black American Music) and I plan on going into music education after I finish my performance degree, as I have a passion for teaching music! As an openly queer and trans person, I have experienced feeling like I don’t belong in certain musical spaces, and have made it my goal to try to help everyone feel welcome and seen as their authentic self, no matter who they are. I have also experienced being a confused and scared first year trying to figure out my course schedule, how to stop locking myself out of my residence dorm, and how to bring my double bass on the metro in the snow. No question is a stupid question - I am here to help!

I also love to crochet, watch Star Wars, and dream about one day seeing an Atlantic Puffin in the wild.

LANGUAGES: English

PROGRAM: B.Mus. piano performance, U1 (second year)

HOMETOWN: Ottawa, ON

More about Jenny

Hi! I’m currently in my second year of my BMus in piano performance. As a second year, I still clearly remember the overwhelming feeling of being thrown into an unfamiliar place where I knew no one. I hope to be a friendly face for new students whether you need advice on making friends, choosing the best practice rooms, or someone to talk to about anything piano (or music) related.

In my free time I love reading, knitting, and exploring Montreal.

Meet Charlotte (she/her)

LANGUAGES: English/French - J'ai appris le français à l'école en Ontario, et même si je ne parle pas parfaitement couramment, ma compréhension est bonne!

PROGRAM: B.Mus. Violin Performance, BA Psychology (double degree) - U3

HOMETOWN: Ottawa, Ontario, CA

More about Charlotte

I chose to be a peer mentor because I feel that student-led support is vital for a well-run program in terms of providing accurate advice from a lived experience. I want to help students feel as comfortable as possible, academically, and mentally!

I am a self-proclaimed crochet grandma, roller skating fiend, and fiddle jammer! I also love nerding out about birds and music neuroscience and am currently writing a research thesis on tonal hierarchy in the brain.

LANGUAGES: English, French, Dutch (Anglais, Français, Néèrlandais)

PROGRAM: B.Mus. Music Composition - U3 (fourth year)

HOMETOWN: Brussels, Belgium

More about Margaux

I'm French, but was raised in Belgium so I speak Dutch fluently! I love to dance or to draw in my free time. I remember what it was like as an entering U0 student, not knowing who to go to if I needed help with something. Everything felt so new and confusing! Now that I'm a third year, I'm really happy to be able to provide support for other students!

Meet Anna (she/her)

LANGUAGES: English

PROGRAM: B.Mus.Ìý Orchestral Trombone Performance, U2

HOMETOWN: Toronto, Ontario

More about Anna

Hi! My name is Anna and I am currently in my third year as an orchestral trombone performance student. Classical music is my absolute passion and I became a peer mentor to meet like-minded individuals, and to be a friendly and familiar face to those who wish to become more acquainted with life at Schulich, as well as those who might have any questions about studying classical music! I was a B Mus Faculty student for my first two years at 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ, so I have plenty of knowledge about switching from Faculty to Performance. I also came to 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ with very little solo and lesson experience, so I have plenty of advice to offer about tailoring your work ethic to a demanding musical environment.

In my spare time, I like to paint, do puzzles, spend time with friends, and pore over which Bolero recording has the best trombone solo. I look forward to helping others at Schulich!
