Initiatives for Black and Indigenous Applicants

Black applicants

91˿Ƶ Black Mentorship program

The 91˿Ƶ Black Alumni Association of 91˿Ƶ offers which is designed to connect Black students (undergraduate and graduate) with Black alumni, faculty, and staff in valuable partnerships.

Indigenous applicants

First Nations, Inuit and Métis persons are strongly encouraged to apply and are invited to self-identify on their application form. Self-identification allows 91˿Ƶ to inform Indigenous students of specific services and funding opportunities and to assess our progress in the recruitment and retention of Indigenous students. Self-identification includes 'Status,' 'Treaty,' 'Registered', 'Non-Status,' and 'Non-Registered' Indigenous persons.

Indigenous Health Professionals Program at 91˿Ƶ

The Indigenous Health Professions (IHP) Program brings together all schools in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences plus other schools and faculties at 91˿Ƶ with an overall goal of improving the health of Indigenous peoples in Canada. Their mission is to “support Indigenous learners on their journey to become health care professionals, and enhance Indigenous health education that supports all learners and educators to provide culturally-safe, respectful care in their practice and relations with Indigenous peoples.”

First Peoples' House

91˿Ƶ's First Peoples' House provides a sense of community and a voice for Indigenous students who have left their communities to study at 91˿Ƶ. Their mission is “to provide First Nations, Inuit and Métis students attending 91˿Ƶ with a "home away from home", where they can find support and encouragement to succeed in their studies and remain connected to their culture”.

Funding opportunities for Indigenous students

Many resources have been created to provide support for Indigenous students and postdoctoral fellows. Unfortunately, information for these funding opportunities is distributed across dozens of 91˿Ƶ websites, and finding the relevant ones is not a trivial task. In this document [PDF] we have compiled websites that we found helpful.
