Advanced Standing for Graduates with a Social Services DEC

The School of Social Work offers advanced standing for graduates of a completed Social Service Worker/Techniques de Travail Social DEC. Admitted students are considered for advanced standing if they graduated from a Social Service Worker/Techniques de Travail Social DEC, completed within the last 5 years only, from the admission categories of CEGEP, transferred from another university, 91˿Ƶ graduates, and inter/intra-faculty transfers from within 91˿Ƶ. Applicants from the mature student category are not eligible for advanced standing.Please note that students with a completed Social Service Worker/Techniques de Travail Social DEC in the last 5 years apply to the BSW program in the proper admission category; there is no specific admission category for Advanced Standing.

A maximum of 15 students per year will be admitted in this category.

Students admitted with a completed Social Service Worker/Techniques de Travail Social DEC normally receive 18 credits applied from the Social Service Worker/Techniques de Travail Social DEC to the BSW. Students are also eligible for up to an additional 9 credits to a maximum of 27 credits in total. The School of Social Work cannot guarantee an accelerated time frame for completing the BSW for students with advanced standing.

For students accepted into the BSW with a completed CEGEP Social Service Worker DEC within the last 5 years and no other university-level studies, credit willbe granted for the following BSW courses based on overlapping content from specific CEGEP courses with a grade of 70% or better:

  • SWRK 220 History & Philosophy of Social Work (3 credits)
  • SWRK 221 Public Social Services in Canada (3 credits)
  • SWRK 222 Introduction to Practicum (3 credits)
  • SWRK 224 Human Development Across the Lifespan (3 credits)
  • SWRK 321 Intro to Practice with Groups (3 credits)
  • SWRK 423 Research Methods (3 credits, to be determined)

For students accepted into the BSW with a completed CEGEP Social Service Worker DEC within the last 5 years and no other university-level studies, an additional 9 credits will be reviewed for credit for the following BSW courses based on overlapping content from specific CEGEP courses with a grade of 70% or better:

  • SWRK 322 Field Practice 1 (3 credits)
  • SWRK 323 Field Practice 2 (3 credits)
  • SWRK 344 Integrative Seminar1(3 credits)

For students accepted into the BSW with a completed CEGEP Social Service Worker DEC to facilitate the process of securing credit for field placement training:

  • Send to thefieldeducation.socialwork [at] mcgill.ca (Field Education Team)a copy of your CEGEP transcript and the course outline(s) for any “Integrative Seminar” courses taken in your Social Services DEC program from the years and terms in which you took these courses. Also, send to thepam.orzeck [at] mcgill.ca (Director of Field Education)with a cc to thefieldeducation.socialwork [at] mcgill.ca (Field Education Team)all field placement evaluations received in your Social Services DEC program from the years and terms in which you completed field placement training. Please “SUBJECT” your email with your last name, your 91˿Ƶ student number, and the topic of your email, i.e., Last name, 123456789, Request for field placement credits for advanced standing. Your specific Integrative Seminar courses will be reviewed for overlap and equivalency to SWRK 344, Integrative Seminar 1, and your field placement experiences will be reviewed for overlap and equivalency in meeting the U2 field placement goals for SWRK 322 & 323, Field Practice 1 & 2.Normally, a follow-up meeting with a member of the Field Education team will be held to discuss and determine exemption with credit from SWRK 322, 323, and 344. If you received a grade of 70% or better and the course content is considered equivalent, you will receive an exemption with credit.

Note:

  • An exemption with or without credit for SWRK 224, “Human Development Across the Lifespan,” based on overlapping content from a course taken at CEGEP, meets the prerequisite for admission into the MSW program, provided the grade is 70% or better.
  • Please retain a copy of your CEGEP transcript to confirm your grade and the course syllabus to upload with your MSW application.
  • An exemption with or without credit from SWRK 224, “Human Development Across the Lifespan,” based on overlapping content from a course taken at CEGEP, does not meetthe prerequisite for the MSc.A. Couple and Family Therapy program.
