The Centre for Visual Methodologies for Social Change (CVMSC) was established in 2004 under the leadership of Professor Claudia Mitchell as a research, teaching, and community outreach centre in the School of Language, Literacies, and Media Education in the then Faculty of Education of UKZN. From 2010 onwards, the Centre became one of the key projects of the newly-established J. L. Dube Chair in Rural Education currently held by Professor Relebohile Moletsane. As the Director of the CVMSC, the J. L. Dube Chair is responsible for leading and organising an array of research-oriented activities, including supervision of postgraduate students, and organising and leading seminars and conferences focusing on participatory visual methodology (PVM), gender and sexuality, social justice, rurality, rural development and education. The Centre employs a core staff of six who run several multi-year community-based participatory research projects. Recent projects undertaken by the CVMSC have used PVM to work with young people and communities on issues related to sexual and reproductive health and rights, comprehensive sexuality education, gender-based violence, transformation in higher education, rurality, rural education, and Girlhood Studies.
